Royal Albert Dock Masterplan Brief
Townscape & Public Realm

Townscape

The buildings within the development differ in hight with the smallest buildings located in the south of the development next to the water with then the buildings rising in height the further north they go away from the water front. This is due to building heights within the area due to safety with the airport.

The blue network within the development has allowed most buildings to now have a waterfront view. Without this the view would have been blocked by buildings to the south. This will entice more residents to the site as more apartments offer a water front view.

Public Realm

The green and blue networks will attract many visitors to the site offering a place for people to sit and enjoy the outdoors. This green space will also provide a place for many markets and live performances allowing the development to become a place full of activity and vibrancy. The on water restaurant will also attract visitors to the site offering a unique dinning experience. As well as this the on water obstacle course will attract those of a younger age to the site encouraging all ages to visit the development creating a more inclusive development.

Safety

There are many pathways within the development being easily identifiable as they run through and either side of the green networks directing people where to walk. These pathways are very wide ensuring there will be no pedestrian congestion and allowing everyone ease of movement though the site. As well as this, the site is all at one level except for the steps leading down to the water front. However, there are also ramps incorporated into the design allowing all visitors accessibility to the water front whether this is for people in wheelchairs or elderly that struggle with mobility.

The area is also car free as the development is fully pedestrianised with the inclusion of bikes. This allows for a more sustainable development whilst also making sure all visitors feel safe when moving around.
