Royal Albert Dock Masterplan Brief
Character & Identity

Character

All new buildings will be to a modern standard and the outside of the buildings being built in phase one will have a similar style exterior look to the current offices that currently exist on the site. Buildings being built in phase two and three will differ with facades resembling an older rustic look resembling the old industrial working buildings that used to be on the site.

The heritage building I am focusing on, which is being converted back into a cafe to celebrate and remember its previous use, will provide a focus point for the development. This is due to the history the building has and also its location as this is the first building you will see when visiting the site through the main entrance from the DLR station.

Style of existing office building
Style of previous industrial buildings that were once on the site

Identity

The blue network plays a huge role in providing the development with an identity as it allows the expansion of the water front letting a large body of water into the site. This provides visitors with another focus point within the development separate to the heritage building. The practical use of the blue network provides identity to the area with the use of piers and steps. As mentioned above, the new buildings being built in phase two and three will add to the identity of the development with their rustic look paying tribute to the old industrial work buildings.
